CHAPTER 11

They spoke with the Montgomerys for a little while longer before deciding that they needed to look elsewhere.

“This case is jes’ about as jumbled as a bowl of spaghetti,” Sheriff Davis muttered.

Brigid chuckled. “A bowl of spaghetti?” she asked.

“Ya’ know what I mean,” he said with a wave and a grumble. As they climbed in the truck, dispatch called him on his radio.

“Go ahead,” he said into the microphone on his shoulder.

“You’ve been requested to help with some cattle on Old Mill Road. There are a couple that have gotten out, and the fence is down. They need all the help they can get.”

“10-4, I’ll head right over,” he said before turning to Brigid. “Yer’ more than welcome to tag along.”

“Pass,” she said as she held up her hand. “I need to visit with my sister, anyway. We’re working on Missy’s baby shower. You handle your cow situation, and then shoot me a message when you’re done. We’ll need to go talk to the other suspects. We still have a lot to go over.”

“Ya’ sure?” he asked once more. “You could be missin’ out on a lot of fun.” She knew he was being sarcastic. Sheriff Davis never was a fan of herding cattle and made it well known when he was expected to do so.

“I’m good,” she said with a wave. Anyway, she had other things to do, and had no intention of stepping in cow pies that day. “I have one or two things that could use my attention. Why don’t you let me know when you’re done and we can pick up where we left off?”

Sheriff Davis nodded. “Works for me, although I admit that I’d rather not end up on the business end of a cow again,” he muttered.

Brigid held in her chuckle. Just the idea of watching a potentially comedic situation almost made her change her mind. Almost.

A short time later Sheriff Davis dropped Brigid off at her car in the Sheriff’s Department parking lot. He pulled up behind where it was parked and came to a stop.

“I’ll let ya’ know when I’m done,” he sighed.

“Don’t act too eager,” Brigid smirked. “And remember, if the cow lifts its tail, you may want to take a step back.”

“Ha-ha,” he said, sounding unamused, but still grinning.

Sliding out of the truck with a wave, she got in her car and headed over to visit her sister at the bookstore. Clouds were building in the distance, and she remembered that they there was a forecast of possible severe weather later. She hoped it held off until tonight when everyone was home. After she climbed out of her car, she paused to look at the clouds that had flattened out at the top and were beginning to spread.

Turning towards the bookstore, she tugged the door open and waved at her sister and Abra, who were standing near a bookshelf.

“Long time no see,” Abra said with a return wave.

“I know, it seems like it’s been a while since we’ve talked,” Brigid answered.
